Greendale Middle School | Academics
Welcome to Greendale Middle School and the 2012-13 school year! Middle school is an exciting time for students and every new school year gives you another chance to redefine the kind of student and young adult you want to be. Your teachers and other adults at the school make it their mission to assist students in reaching appropriate academic and behavioral goals.

As a school, our goal is to provide our students with whatever it is they need to be successful. Academic achievement and appropriate behavior largely depends on each individual student, but never forget that there are many people in our building that can help you in making this the best year it can be for you. This agenda book plays a large role in your school year.  Use it for hall passes, keeping track of your assignments and to-do lists, and for organizing your time.

Promotion Policy
There is District policy regarding the advancement of eighth graders to the ninth grade. The policy reads that a student will advance from eighth to ninth grade if: The student participates in the 8th grade WKCE standardized testing, and the student earns a score of BASIC on at least four of the subtests (reading/language arts, social studies, math, science, and writing) and the student earns a cumulative yearly grade point average of 2.0 or above.

Academic Assistance Program
The Greendale School District, through its ongoing work on honing transition strategies, recognizes the need to hold middle school students more academically accountable in the face of more stringent State standards and our own high academic expectations. Also, we are committed to taking every available opportunity to remediate and enrich our middle school students in order to achieve middle school academic success and to aide their impending transition to high school.

Often, we have referred the need for some sort of “bottom line” for non-special education middle school students who are at-risk of academic failure. Special education students' needs will be addressed through the IEP process. The Administrative Team has developed the following plan that would work with the other components of the at-risk program at GHS and GMS to provide students with both consequences for their academic struggles and a supportive environment to assist them in increasing their knowledge and skills for academic success.

Basically, we are communicating through our expectations that we cannot accept minimal or poor academic effort or chronic attendance problems. This plan gives the child a clear way “back in” and constant academic and behavioral support.

Ladder Of Interventions
The Ladder of Interventions becomes our primary response to the individual factors that negatively affect student achievement.  Students that do not meet academic expectations will be given support as part of our Ladder of Interventions program. This work is based on our belief that students who are at-risk in middle school need a second chance for success.  National studies (Roderick, Phi Delta Kappa, 2000) show that the odds for a student dropping out of high school are increased by 90% if a student is retained in fourth through eighth grade.  This tells us that we need timely, appropriate academic interventions for these students to go along with our already high expectations.  We must believe that all students can learn, regardless of previous performance or personal background. As professional educators, it is our job to provide a “way back in” for these students.  The Ladder of Interventions will be the vehicle to further ensure an appropriate education for all.
