This Week at Highland View: August 26
August 26, 2011 | Posted by Leni Dietrich
Dear Highland View Parents/Guardians:
It is hard to believe we are less than one week away from the first day of school. The summer has flown by and we are all looking forward to the start of the 2011-12 school year on September 1.
I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the classroom renovation project underway at Highland View. The repurposing of the computer lab into two classrooms is nearing completion and staff will receive their keys this week. The addition of classroom space will allow for a reading room dedicated to reading instruction as well as a Spanish classroom. All of the computers in our building have been deployed to classrooms and we are adding a mobile lab of 30 laptops and 30 iPads. In total, with the devices we had in the building, we will have just shy of 200 devices available to our students. Many staff members have spent this summer working on projects for student learning that incorporate technology as a learning tool.
Important News...
We have had some staffing changes this year and I am pleased to announce the new teachers who will be joining our Highland View staff.
First Grade- Ms. Chrisy Hodapp will be teaching first grade with Ms. Merritt and Mrs. Weber. Ms. Hodapp taught in the Wauwatosa School District for two years before taking the opportunity to teach abroad. She has spent the past two years teaching at the American Community Schools in Greece. We look forward to the global perspective she can bring to our team.
Fifth Grade- Ms. Lisa D’Acquisto comes to us from the New Berlin School District where she taught for fourteen years. Additionally, she taught in the bilingual program in the Milwaukee Public Schools. She has extensive experience with curriculum development in the area of literacy.
Ms. Michelle Brody will be replacing Mr. Hebbe as our orchestra teacher. She completed her program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. We look forward to having her working with our students.
Returning to us this year is Mr. Fred Clement who will teach fifth grade. Mr. Clement taught at Canterbury School last year and we are glad to have him back on staff.
Ms. Kris Bertling has taught art part-time at Highland View and will now be our permanent full-time art teacher. Mr. Keith Bohlin will continue in his role as a second grade teacher. Ms. Merritt is back with us teaching first grade after having spent last year working as a reading interventionist in the district.
We feel very fortunate to have these teachers with us this year and look forward to their work with an already outstanding faculty.
Congratulations to Ms. Henkel on her marriage this summer. Her new last name is now Kabele.
If you haven’t seen the new Highland View playground equipment, please take the opportunity to do so. We have two structures now that are geared towards the younger students and have added activity panels to both of these structures. I would like to thank the PTO for their assistance financially with moving this effort forward.
On behalf of our entire staff, I would like to thank you for sharing your child/children with us. We take great pride in Highland View and look forward to opening our doors to families and students on September 1.
Upcoming Events
K4 Parent Informational Meeting - August 29
The K4 Informational Parent Meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on August 29. This meeting generally lasts about one hour.
MID Night - August 30
MID Night has been restructured a bit this year. Families are welcome to visit classrooms from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to drop off supplies and meet the teacher. We ask that families place supplies in a paper bag to be dropped off in the classroom. Staff will assist students with putting away supplies on the first day of school. Kindergarten teachers are beginning one half hour earlier in an effort to accommodate families. Kindergarten parents will gather as a group at 5:00 p.m. in the gym rather than room 105 which was indicated earlier. Kindergarten students will be supervised in the classrooms during the teacher presentation. After the presentation, families will have the opportunity to explore the K5 classrooms and informally meet the teachers. The PTO is sponsoring a Meet and Greet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Welcome Breakfast – September 1
On Thursday, September 1, the Highland View PTO will host a Welcome Breakfast for parents. Once the bell rings at 8:44 a.m., and your kids go off to begin their school day, join us in the Highland View gym for doughnuts, coffee, and conversation. The Welcome Breakfast provides parents who are new to Highland View a chance to meet PTO officers and other parents. Parents of returning students have a chance to catch up with friends and meet new families as well. Even if you have just a few minutes, we encourage you to join us. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
No School - September 5
Please remember there is no school on Labor Day, September 5. School resumes on Tuesday, September 6.
