This Week at College Park: August 26

Good Afternoon Families,

We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our students on September 1st! Throughout the summer, teachers have been engaged in discussing the “possibilities” of learning in Greendale and our custodial staff worked to get our classrooms ready for the school year.

We have a number of new faces in our building this year. Our upper level will be adding three new classroom teachers. We welcome Mrs. Brock to our third grade team. She joins us after many years of teaching at Highland View. Ms. Lemke will return to fourth grade for the full year, after filling in for Mrs. Koeberl at the end of the last school year. Ms. Rosing is our new fifth grade teacher. She joins us after teaching three years in a prior district.

Mrs. Stoltz will be our new speech and language disabilities teacher. She has been working in another district and will bring a great deal of experience to our position. Ms. Ciatti is taking on the role of teaching English as a Second Language. She had the opportunity to student teach last year with Mrs. Beaudot and also in a fifth grade classroom in the district. We also welcome Mrs. Dobrinska to our teaching team this year. She will be working with kindergarten, first and third grades.

Welcome Back Night
Families will be “welcomed back” on Tuesday, August 30. Families in grades one through five may visit rooms from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. You will have an opportunity to drop off supplies (please place your child’s supplies in a paper bag labeled with his/her name), meet your child’s teachers and pick up information regarding the year’s curriculum and expectations. Following the classroom visits, ice cream will be served in the cafeteria beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Kindergarten families should report at 5:00 p.m. for a parent presentation. Children will have the opportunity to view a short movie, supervised by school staff, during the parent presentation. Families will meet up again at 5:30 p.m. to explore the kindergarten rooms! There will be a short presentation, given by Mrs. Owens-Bur, for families new to our school at 6:00 p.m. in the IMC. We will be sure to end in time for ice cream!

Literacy Curriculum
We will be implementing some new curriculum in our reading/language arts classes this year. You may find information regarding all curriculum for your grade level on our district website. Teachers will also be sharing information specific to your grade on their websites. As always, feel free to contact us regarding any questions you may have.

Parent Action Team
The Parent Action Team has developed a theme to help students “Invest in Their Future.” Students will focus on preparing for their future by reading outside of the school day, using math in everyday situations, making healthy choices and building a strong community. Be looking for more information on this program during the year.

Summer School Feedback
The 2011 summer school program ended on July 21. Over 550 elementary and middle school students participated in the various classes. Next year, we plan to share summer school information at the end of March, so please be sure to check your child's school website for details. Sign-up will start March 26, 2012.

As always, we are interested in parent and student feedback regarding our programs. If you have not done so already, please take some time to click on the link below and answer 8 quick questions about our summer school program. Even if you did not attend a summer school class, we are interested in your feedback. We are looking for ways to improve classes for next year. Thank you for your time and we hope your child had a good summer.

Child Development Days
The Greendale School District will hold Child Development Days at College Park School on Wednesday, September 7, from 3-6:00 p.m. and on Thursday, September 8, from 8-11:00 a.m. and from 3-6:00 p.m.

The district's annual child-find program screens three- and four-year-old Greendale residents to assess vision, hearing, language, early learning, motor and social skills. Families will have the opportunity to discuss screening results and concerns with District specialists. Local organizations will have booths related to early childhood development, and handouts in many areas of child development will be available. The program takes approximately one hour. Please contact the Greendale School District Office at (414) 423-2715 for information and to register your child.

Greendale Step Up to Better Health Fun Run/Walk
College Park staff and students will again be participating in the Step Up to Better Health Fun Run/Walk. We have many staff members and their families signed up to walk and run on October 16. Proceeds of the event benefit Greendale Schools. Sign-up information will be available at our Welcome Back Night and can be found on the website.

Asbestos Notification
In 1998, all buildings owned, leased, or "under the control of” the School District were inspected by EPA accredited inspectors, with building material samples analyzed by an independent laboratory. Based on the inspection, the School District prepared, and the state approved, a comprehensive management plan for asbestos located within its buildings, safely and responsibly.

Once every three years, certified inspectors must re-inspect remaining materials. In addition, the rule requires a periodic walk-through in each area containing asbestos every six months.

Short term workers (outside contractors e.g. telephone repair workers, electricians, etc.) must be provided information regarding the location of asbestos in which they may come into contact. Short-term workers shall contact the lead maintenance person before commencing work.

The Greendale School District has a list of the location(s) and type(s) of asbestos containing materials found in the building and a description and timetable for their proper management. A copy of the Asbestos Management Plan is available for review in the school office. Copies are available. Our goal is to be in full compliance with AHERA. It is our policy to maintain a safe and healthful environment for our students and our staff members. This shall be accomplished by strict enforcement of the policies regarding asbestos by the manager and the school officials.

The Greendale School District also requires that all new building materials introduced into the School District are free from asbestos. For all new buildings/additions, the architect responsible for the design certifies that to the best of their knowledge, no asbestos containing materials are used. If new buildings are acquired, they too will be inspected. The Greendale School District has completed another 3-Year Re-Inspection of remaining materials. This report has been submitted by:
