Greendale School District Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition
PreambleWhereas, children need access to healthful foods and opportunities to be physically active in order to grow, learn, and thrive;
Whereas, good health fosters student attendance and education;
Whereas, obesity rates have doubled in children and tripled in adolescents over the last two decades, and physical inactivity and excessive calorie intake are the predominant causes of obesity;
Whereas, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are responsible for two-thirds of deaths in the United States, and major risk factors for those diseases, including unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and obesity, often are established in childhood;
Whereas, nationally the items most commonly sold from school vending machines, school stores, and snack bars include low-nutrition foods and beverages, such as soda, sports drinks, imitation fruit juices, chips, candy, cookies, and snack cakes;
Whereas, school districts around the country are facing significant fiscal and scheduling constraints; and
Whereas, community participation is essential to the development and implementation of successful school wellness policies;
Thus, the Greendale School District is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. Therefore, it is the policy of the Greendale School District that:
- The school district will engage students, parents, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals, and other interested community members in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing district-wide nutrition and physical activity policies.
- All students in grades K-12 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.
- Foods and beverages sold or served at school will meet the nutrition recommendations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
- Qualified food service professionals will provide students with access to a variety of affordable, nutritious, and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of and will provide clean, safe, and pleasant settings and adequate time for students to eat.
- To the maximum extent practicable, all schools in our district will participate in available federal school meal programs including the National School Lunch Program.
- Schools will provide nutrition education and physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity, and will establish linkages between health education and school meal programs, and with related community services.

Greendale Health Department
The Greendale Health Department provides a variety of programs and services aimed at preventing or reducing health problems and promoting optimum health for individuals, families, and the community. Health Department services include: communicable disease control, environmental health services, immunization program, adult health services, home visit program, school health services, lead poisoning prevention program, health education services, the emergency preparedness program, and tobacco prevention and education. Step Up to Better Health Committee
The Step Up to Better Health Committee is a community group committed to wellness in the community. They partner with various organizations such as the Greendale School District, the Greendale Park & Recreation Department, and the Greendale Health Department. The Committee is involved with the Lighten Up Wisconsin program, the Greendale Community Charity Walk, and the Fun Run & Walk. They also sponsor winter walking in Greendale High School. The Greendale Goes Green Committee is a team of Greendale School District staff, teachers, administrators and students working together with community members to enhance the community's knowledge of green and sustainability concepts. Authorization for School Personnel to Administer Medication to Student
Any prescription medication that will be administered at school must be accompanied by a district prescription medication form signed by the parent and physician. If a student will carry an inhaler, the same form is required with the parent and physician's signatures. A parent signature is required on the form for any non-prescription medication. Parental Consent for School-Based Health Care Service
In an effort to promote the health and well-being of Greendale Public Schools students, Greendale Public Schools offers students access to health care services provided by a qualified nurse practitioner from Aurora Health Care (Aurora Clinic Staff) at a school-based clinic. Mrs. Andrzejewski graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1975 with a BSN. She became Greendale School District’s first District Nurse in 2007. Previously, she worked in acute and long term care settings, home care and public health. She is a member of the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses and the National Association of School Nurses. The Student & Family Assistance Program
The Student & Family Assistance Program, sponsored by the Aurora Employee Assistance Program, offers free confidential access to a variety of professionals for consultation about issues that commonly affect students and their families. The SFAP is available to all household members of Greendale Schools, whether the problem is related to a student, an adult, or the whole family. The program promotes healthy homes, healthy minds and healthy families. For more information, please click here.
Nurse Practitioner
The Greendale School District provides students with access to the services of a nurse practitioner at no cost to parents. High school age students can self-refer. Students in elementary and middle school must be referred and seen with a parent. The clinic provides physical exams; diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injury; diagnosis and management of chronic and episodic illness; health education and promotion; and athletic physicals.
