As FACT Board Members, the students recruited new members, implemented actions in their community, and were instrumental in the creation of the Manipulicious advocacy campaign to show how the tobacco industry uses colorful packaging and candy flavoring to sell their tobacco products. “It’s been a lot of work, but I really feel my voice was heard on an issue I care about,” said Staats.
Since its inception in 2001, FACT members have been working tirelessly to reduce tobacco’s burden on Wisconsin youth. Over the last 10 years, the smoking rate among Wisconsin high school youth fell drastically. However, an estimated one in five Wisconsin high school youth use tobacco products.
FACT is part of the Department of Health Service’s statewide tobacco prevention efforts and is managed by the American Lung Association in Wisconsin. For more information, visit www.fightwithfact.com.

GEO Makes a Splash in Chicago
November 12, 2010
GEO club recently visited the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The high school environmental club members had a fun and educational day observing and interacting with the thousands of marine and freshwater creatures at the Shedd. They were treated to a show demonstrating the unique abilities of the Beluga Whales and Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, a 4D movie about the north and south pole and an interactive tide pool where they could touch sea stars. In addition to being interesting and fun, the trip helps provide background information for the Sturgeon Bowl Team members. Sturgeon Bowl is a competition done in a quiz game style that uses questions about oceanography, environment and related technology. The competition is the first week in February and is a challenging event for those involved. Participation in the Sturgeon Bowl makes student eligible to apply for exciting internships and scholarships. Two former GEO members won internships by writing essays and spent their summers in the Redwood Forest in Northern California and San Diego coastline assisting actual researchers with environmental projects. Reality Day - A Wake Up Call for Seniors
May 28, 2009
Over 200 GHS seniors attended the school’s third annual Reality Day Senior Conference at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee on May 20.
Reality Day was created to ensure students’ success upon entering a new stage of their lives by providing important and useful information that will support them in becoming more informed consumers and citizens. The event provided answers to the ever-popular student questions, “Why do we have to learn this stuff and when are we ever going to use this information?”
Students had the opportunity to attend five of eight break-out sessions on a variety of topics including The Legal Issues of Being 18, Campus and Personal Safety, Identity Theft, Surviving Dorm Life, Basic Investing, Building Wealth for the Long Term, Career Development, and Apprenticeships. As students were not able to attend all of the informational sessions, they each received a binder with copies of handouts and presentations.
The information and material shared with the students will be invaluable to them now and in the future. No matter what road each student takes after leaving Greendale High School, the tools they learned from this day, and throughout their four years here, will lead them down the road to success.
Special thanks go to the Education Foundation of Greendale and the Greendale School District for their support of Reality Day 09. Click here to view slideshow...

Peers with IMPACT
February 19, 2009
Twenty-four Greendale High School students are trained in Peers with IMPACT, the leading peer-to-peer alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) abuse prevention education program in the area. The program enhances school efforts to promote drug-free learning environments for students. Its mission is to develop leadership skills among high school youth in promoting healthy lifestyle choices and preventing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among other youth.
Students in 9th through 12th grade are recruited, and then trained, to become Peer Educators who specialize in presenting factual, age-appropriate information about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to elementary and middle school youth in 8th grade. These students are selected according to their commitment to live a healthy lifestyle and their desire to serve as positive role models for their peers. The program has been highly effective in presenting younger children with accurate information and relevant decision-making skills. Students make three presentations to the middle schoolers, assisting them in their transition to high school, answering their questions and easing their anxiety.
Here are some quotes from the Peers with IMPACT role models when asked for feedback on their experiences:
“The Peers program really strengthened my presentation skills and aided in my ability to answer questions people asked me.”
“I like it when kids come to the high school and recognize me from the presentation because that means they probably remember something I taught them.”
“After class, a boy came up to me and said, 'Thanks' because he was drug-free and he was glad to know that not everyone in high school did drugs.”
“It made me feel good when my teacher brought it to my attention that I did a good job during my presentation. She said her class was difficult to manage and that I had done well. It really felt great to hear that from a teacher.”
" 'Peers ' has showed me how I can affect other people’s lives and make an influence in my school. It’s made me realize how influential I can be and that I can make a difference. It has also helped me realize how much I value my friends and family and everyone I have surrounded myself with.”

GHS's Annual Service Learning Project Underway
November 29, 2008
Many GHS students are involved in Empty Bowls, the school's service learning project aimed at fighting hunger in the community. In US Studies, students set up "bowl-making" factories in connection with their unit on the Industrial Revolution. Each student was trained on their task for the project and they worked as teams to complete their piece quota for the day. Over the course of the two-day production line, they were able to complete about 550 bowls. Ceramics students created three bowls on the pottery wheel as part of the ceramics curriculum that will be donated to the Empty Bowls project. Family and Consumer Education students are working to develop new soup recipes. Several new soups were tested and compared to the traditional soup offerings. Students created the soups and then tested the recipes using a soup rubric that judged flavor, consistency and appearance. The Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held on March 21 at Greendale High School. For a donation, guests enjoy a meal of homeade soup served in a handmade ceramic bowl which may be taken home as a reminder of hunger in the community. Click here to view slideshow...
