Greendale School District Honored for Significant Gains in Advanced Placement Access and Student Performance

The Greendale School District is one of the few
school districts in the nation being recognized
by the College Board with a place on the 2nd
Annual AP® Honor Roll for simultaneously
increasing access to Advanced Placement®
coursework, while maintaining or increasing the
percentage of students earning scores of 3 or
higher on AP exams.
“We’ve worked hard to make AP courses more accessible and success within these courses more attainable for all students,” said Greendale High School Principal Steven Lodes. “We’ve increased the types of AP courses offered, but more importantly, we’ve focused on quality instruction within these courses to engage students and prepare them for course assessments. Greendale High School received this recognition because of high expectations from the students in their studies, from the parents in what they want for their children and from our incredible teachers who work tirelessly for student success.”
Achieving these goals indicates that a school is successfully identifying motivated, academically-prepared students who are likely to benefit most from AP coursework. Since 2009, Greendale High School increased the number of students participating in AP exams from 139 to 211, while increasing the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or over from 71% in 2009 to 80% in 2011.
“The AP Honor Roll districts are defying expectations by expanding access while enabling their students to maintain or improve their AP Exam scores.” said College Board President Gaston Caperton.
“This school district has achieved something very remarkable. It managed to open the doors of its AP classrooms to many more students, while also increasing the percentage of students earning high enough AP Exam grades to stand out in the competitive college admission process and qualify for college credit and placement,” said Trevor Packer, College Board Senior Vice President of AP and College Readiness.
Established in 1939, the Greendale School District is home to more than 2,600 students. The district prides itself in providing an excellent education for all students from kindergarten through twelfth grade at Greendale High School, Greendale Middle School and three elementary schools (Canterbury, College Park and Highland View).
