Newsweek Ranks Greendale High School in Top 5%
June 16, 2009
The Greendale School District announced that
Greendale High School has been named to
Newsweek’s list of America’s Top High Schools.
The list compiled by Jay Mathews, education
writer for the Washington Post, ranks public
schools according to a ratio calculated by
dividing the number of Advanced Placement tests
taken by the number of graduating seniors.
According to Mathews, the ratio is an indicator
of how well a school prepares students for
college. To be included on the list, a school
must have a ratio of at least 1.000.
Greendale High School Principal Steve Lodes notes that it is an honor for the school to be recognized by Newsweek as one of the top 5% of public schools in the country. “It speaks to both our focus on providing quality academic opportunities for all students and also the high expectations set by parents and students – as evidenced by signing up for the rigorous courses upon which this award is based,” said Lodes.
William Hughes, Greendale School District Superintendent, is proud of the school’s accomplishments. “Greendale High School is known for student achievement, instilling a sense of responsibility in our students, and strong success in graduates going on to higher education,” said Hughes. “The Newsweek ranking lists the top Wisconsin high schools for academics and advanced placement coursework. Each of these schools is well respected in Wisconsin for their high achievement and good results with students. I commend the faculty and students of Greendale High School for their continued pursuit of academic excellence.”
