The Greendale School District announced the recipients of the 22nd Annual Employee of Merit Award at the school district’s opening day staff meeting on August 26.

Greendale Superintendent William Hughes and Board of Education President Dr. Thomas Slota presented the awards to the following school district employees: Laurie Schultz, Canterbury; Zorka Novakovich, College Park; Karen Weber, Highland View; Emily Deau, Greendale Middle School; Shelley Retzlaff, District; Jennifer Hussa, Greendale High School; and Paula Loubier, Greendale High School.

Superintendent Hughes acknowledged the dedication of the 2010 award winners. “The Greendale School District's Employee of Merit Award highlights the contributions that district faculty and administrators make to engage and inspire students to help them learn and grow,” said Hughes. “Due to the commitment of these outstanding leaders, the Greendale Schools are a great place for all students to develop their unique abilities and achieve success.”

The Employee of Merit Award recognizes an employee or groups of employees who have provided meritorious service: those who have done something special during the year which could include commendable teaching procedures, contributions to the improvement of operations and practices of the district, or implementation of an innovative idea or program. Nominations were sought from fellow employees, parents, administrators, students, or by self-nomination. Winners were selected by a committee which included former Employee of Merit winners. Each winner received an honorarium funded by Dr. Thomas Slota, President of the Board of Education.

Greendale School District 2009-10 Student Achievement Report Summary

The Greendale School District announced Greendale High School’s composite score earned on the ACT, the college admission and placement examination taken by high school students across the nation. The results, typically released in August by ACT, Inc. for the prior school year, show Greendale students achieving a composite score of 24.0 for 2010. The examination consisted of curriculum-based tests of educational development in English, mathematics, reading and science designed to measure the skills needed for success in first-year college coursework. The average composite score in Wisconsin for 2010 is 22.1.

Greendale Superintendent Bill Hughes is pleased with Greendale’s results. “The Greendale School District’s board, administration and teacher leaders focus relentlessly on student achievement results as defined by test scores and internal assessments,” said Hughes. “Understanding where our students are doing well and, more importantly, where we can do better to help them achieve is driving Greendale Schools reputation for strong student learning.”

The District’s annual Student Achievement Report was presented by the administration to the Board of Education on August 16. The report included the methods of summative assessment for students in the Greendale Schools and results from the 2009-2010 standardized tests.

Results were presented from the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE), the test mandated by the Department of Public Instruction to comply with the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also known as No Child Left Behind. During the November of 2009 exam, students at fourth, eighth, and tenth grades were assessed in five subject areas, including: reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Writing was also assessed at these grade levels through a timed writing. Additionally, students at the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh grades were tested in the areas of reading and math. Scores are reported as advanced, proficient, basic, and minimal.

Greendale Middle School students at all grade levels scored in the upper one-third of students in the testing region (CESA 1). In addition, seventh grade students earned the second highest score in math and reading. At the high school, WKCE scores in all areas of assessment were in the top 20% in the testing region. Reading scores at Greendale High School improved significantly over the last 2 years. The District’s analysis of standardized test result data from prior years helped to focus efforts on improving reading instruction in English classes and other content areas.

The WKCE was designed to measure progress towards the State Standards in the content areas. The information gathered from these assessments is intended for use by districts as indicators of curriculum and content coverage. In examining the overall performance of students within the Greendale School District, results indicate that the curriculum is in alignment with State Standards, and students had the opportunity to learn that curriculum.

Results of the Advanced Placement Testing at the high school level were also reported. For 2010, 192 students were tested and 335 exams were given. These numbers represent significant increases over prior years.

"Greendale continues to increase the rigor available to students, and we are proud that a record number of students chose to take an AP course and exam,” said Kim Amidzich, Director of Assessment and Learning. “This illustrates that our students accept challenging course work because they have confidence in their learning in the Greendale Schools.”

The Advanced Placement results for Greendale High School show that 278 exams were passed in 2010 compared to 217 exams passed in 2009. Each year, the College Board, the administrator of the Advanced Placement Program, reports the “Equity and Excellence” score which is the percentage of graduating seniors who have passed at least one AP exam prior to graduation. In 2007, 33.3% of the Greendale High School graduating seniors passed at least one AP exam, and in 2010, the Equity and Excellence percentage rose to 37.2%.
