Greendale School District Named a Milwaukee Magazine Best School

In its April 2012 issue, Milwaukee Magazine again ranked the best schools in the region. They looked at 33 K-12 and 21 K-8 school districts in the five-county Milwaukee area.

Out of the 54 school districts, Greendale High School placed 8th and Greendale K-8 schools placed 6th for “Top Scorers.” For this report, Milwaukee Magazine ranked districts’ standardized test scores in math and reading from the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE) for K-8 and also factored in indicators of college readiness, such as ACT scores and the percentage of students scoring three or higher on Advanced Placement tests for high schools.

The Greendale School District also ranked 6th for the best overall K-12 district in “The Big Picture.” This study identified the area’s most “well-rounded” school systems and factored in the K-8 and high school scores equally.

This year, the magazine added a second rating, which considered the connection between student achievement and a district’s poverty level, using the percentage of students receiving free or reduced price lunch. When these factors were taken into account, the Greendale School District ranked third among over-performing high schools and second in over-performing K-8 programs.

“We are proud to again be named one of Milwaukee Magazine’s Best Schools,” said Superintendent William Hughes. “These results recognize the great work our students and staff are doing every day in the classroom and even with higher levels of poverty in Greendale than in the past, we continue to perform well.”
