Greendale School District WKCE Results Remain Strong
March 27, 2012
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released the 2011-12 Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (WKCE) scores for all Wisconsin public school districts. Student performance on these state assessments is reported in proficiency categories and used to determine the adequate yearly progress of students at the school, district and state levels.
The WKCE was administered to students in third through eighth and tenth grades in November 2011. Third, fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students were tested in reading and math. Students in fourth, eighth and tenth grade were tested in reading, language arts, writing, math, science and social studies.
The Greendale School District WKCE results continue to be strong and are far above state averages. Scores for third through tenth grade math and reading range from 85 to 96 percent proficient and advanced across all grade levels.
Superintendent William Hughes is proud of the students’ performance on the state exams and the dedication of the faculty to ensure Greendale students have the chance to learn the curriculum measured on these tests. "In Greendale, standardized testing is one of the components used to evaluate students and curriculum," said Hughes. "It is an important way for parents, citizens, and educators to understand what and how students are learning. When student performance, spending per pupil and household income were considered, Greendale continues to be one of the top school districts in the region as recognized by Milwaukee Magazine in its April 2012 issue."

Kim Amidzich, Director of Assessment and Learning, noted that gains in reading scores are attributed to the focus on personalizing reading instruction if the middle and elementary schools, which have been in place since 2006. “Growth over the last few years can be tied to our concentration on reading development and skills, such as using independent reading and individual reading conferencing with students,” said Amidzich. “Students that first experienced these changes in reading are now performing particularly well at the high school level.”
Math scores have also remained strong this year. This is due to the continuous efforts to personalized pacing of math instruction at the elementary level and a relentless drive towards excellence. “Although we are very pleased with our sustained progress, Greendale Schools is always interested in attaining higher levels of success in math and reading for all of our students,” said Amidzich.
