Fourth graders have become marine biologists trying to solve the problem of how does a mother dolphin communicate with its calf? They are trying to explain patterns that different animals use to communicate with each other. They used a SIM (digital simulation) to investigate wavelengths, amplitude, and a visualization of sound particles. They also researched a specific animal and created pop-up books during a writing activity to explain how their animal communicates.

Canterbury third grade students are learning about astronomy. They have been researching what it is like for astronauts to live and work on the International Space Station. While reading text and watching videos of astronauts on the ISS they took notes about how they sleep, get ready for the day, eat, exercise, work, and spend their free time. They are using all of their new learning to write an essay about what an astronaut’s day could look like on the ISS. This group of students are out of this world!

Third grade classes at Canterbury celebrated the end of their ELA astronomy unit with a "Trip Through Space"! Students invited special guests to join them as they journeyed through a series of stations related to some of their learning throughout the unit. Students practiced punctuation with quotes from famous astronauts, built 3-D representations of constellations, and showed off research posters about the planets. Third graders collected stamps in their "space passport" as they completed the various activities. It was a wonderful way for families to get a glimpse at what students have been working on at school, and for students to show off all their hard work!

It was a busy few weeks of amazing music making at Canterbury prior to Spring Break! Fourth graders have been hard at work learning recorder. Students have learned how to read music, play a brand new instrument, and now are earning "recorder karate" belts when they master new songs. Fifth graders have also been learning a new instrument - the ukulele! They have learned five chords so far and are able to play many different songs. Third through fifth grade choir students joined all other choir students in the district for an afternoon of singing and fun during the 1st Annual District Choir Festival!

On Friday, March 20, Canterbury Elementary PTO put together a celebration commemorating the school’s 60 years of service to the Greendale Community. We held a special Diamond Jubilee school assembly in the afternoon and an Open House in the evening. The assembly featured a performance by their Spanish Dancers and a reading of the Canterbury Day proclamation by Village Board members. At the Open House, visitors could view memorabilia from the school’s history, enjoy cake, popcorn and lemonade, see student's artwork and check out what they are doing in class. There was lots of joy as current and former staff members, students and families turned out to mingle, reminisce and celebrate.

What a fantastic start to our Read-A-Thon fundraiser! On Monday, March 2, the Canterbury community celebrated our fourth annual Pop Open a Good Book event. After a fun-filled "Pajama Day" at school, families tuned in virtually to enjoy a night of storytelling. We were treated to wonderful readings from Ms. Clark West, Sra. Hartmann, Ms. Lawrence, Ms. Becker, Ms. Jordan, Sra. Delemont, Ms. Braatz, and Ms. Sawotka.
The momentum from that night carried us through a record-breaking week! We are thrilled to announce that we had another incredibly successful fundraiser, raising $5,000 this year! Even more impressive is the dedication of our students: together, our school recorded over 381 hours read in just 7 days. That is a lot of pages turned!
We are so grateful to the PTO for the popcorn treats and to our wonderful families and staff for supporting our reading goals and making this event such a hit. Thank you for helping our students develop a lifelong love of reading!

Our Canterbury students have been working hard to earn Golden Paws by meeting their classroom goals! These goals include quick transitions, active listening, cleaning up after ourselves, and using appropriate voice levels.
In March, Canterbury is focusing on Cooperation. Classrooms are revisiting the importance of respect and how it connects to working together as a team. In addition, our non-classroom teachers are awarding “golden coins” to classes that demonstrate outstanding cooperation throughout the school. Keep an eye out for the pot of gold at the end of our rainbow in the lunchroom as it fills with coins earned through teamwork and positive choices.
We wrapped up a fantastic second trimester with a Musical Glow Lunch! We are proud of our students and the way they continue to demonstrate what it means to be safe, respectful, and responsible each day at school. Their hard work and positive choices help make our Canterbury community such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

The Canterbury library has been very busy with Battle of the Books! Battle of the Books is a statewide program that allows students to read a wide range of genres and authors and participate in a competition that tests their knowledge on the books they read. Fourth and fifth grade students who participated were organized into teams of four students. Each team worked hard to read the 20 books included on the 2025-2026 Battle of the Books booklist, which they were to be tested on. Canterbury had 12 teams participate, and last month they battled it out to determine what team would represent Canterbury at the state competition. The Rad Readers came out victorious and in a special demonstration battle at an assembly also beat two teacher teams! At the assembly, four students were awarded the Literary Spirit Award for their hard work during Battle of the Books. The Rad Readers completed the state Battle of the Books exam! The library is very proud of the Rad Readers and all our Battle of the Books participants!
