DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEB. 12! Get in on 2026 Black History Month Essay & Art Contest

To recognize Black History Month, Greendale students are invited to explore the profound impact of Black scientists, researchers, and inventors who have shaped American history through their brilliance and perseverance. This year’s contest highlights the contributions of "Black thinkers" whose innovations—from the stars above to the toys in our backyards—have solved global problems and inspired generations. Students are asked to respond to the prompts shared on this document and create an original essay or artwork reflecting on what the words of these individuals mean to them personally or how they are inspired by this individual’s work or words. Submissions are now due on February 12, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. to the school office. Awards will be presented at the Black History Month Community Connections celebration on Thursday, February 19, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Highland View.

Attention all GMS Students and Families!

Our second Student Activity Night of the year will be held next Friday, January 30, from 5:00-7:00pm at GMS. All GMS students are invited to attend. Our GMS Band is sponsoring this specific Student Activity Night and will be coordinating volunteers for it.

Students who are interested in attending must print off and bring a signed Permission Slip, along with the $5 fee, to Activity Night on January 30. Permission slips will also be handed out by students' Morning Meeting teachers, as well.

Please note the following:
Only current GMS students may attend this.
This Student Activity Night goes from 5:00-7:00pm -unlike the one in November, which went from 3:30-5:00pm. All other Student Activity Nights this year will be from 5:00-7:00pm.

Once students are in the building, they must stay for the entire event until 7:00pm. (If they need to leave early, a parent/guardian must come into the building to pick them up.)
Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.

We are excited to see you on January 30!

GMS 6th graders wrapped up their research unit on our changing oceans recently with a video call to a real-life explorer -- Mark Wood, who travels to remote places around the world. Mr. Wood has led polar and mountain expeditions for over twenty years in areas including the Arctic Circle, Antarctica and the Himalayas, plus the Norwegian, Canadian and Alaskan high Arctic. He has trained and led teams and supported film crews for documentaries. This was a an extraordinary culminating activity and the students were fascinated by his stories and adventures! #LearnGrowEngageGreendale #CultivatingExcellence

In Science, 7th graders designed and tested their own homemade flameless heater. In an emergency situation, without electricity for an extended amount of time, people like to have warm food. Students designed a homemade flameless heater with household materials to create a chemical reaction. They had to follow a set of criteria. They worked very hard on their prototypes!
