Our first graders have been working hard as readers! They're diving into their 1st grade decodable books, Snap Shots, where they’re meeting new characters and going on exciting adventures—like camping trips and visits to the UK. Students are tackling tricky words, practicing fluency, and putting all their effort into becoming stronger readers every day. They also practiced retelling and sequencing the story “Bob the Cat”, showing great comprehension skills. We’re so proud of their perseverance and progress. First graders can do hard things! Keep up the great work—we can’t wait to see how much you grow as readers this year!

Canterbury First Graders participated in the Fable Olympics to celebrate the culmination of their first Knowledge unit. They participated in different activities and games based on the many fables and folktales they read throughout the unit. Students took part in a "Golden Egg" race, ran relays as a "Sheep in Wolf clothing", balanced pails on their head just like "The Maid and the Milk Pail," threw spiders in a web for "Anansi", followed the directions on a weather vane in honor of "Medio Polito", and ran through McGregor's garden as bunnies! Everyone had a wonderful time -- reading and celebrating what they learned!

Canterbury students have been "dotting up” the Art Room in late September! Every student has created at least one dot—many created more—and they are now proudly displayed in the halls as our collection continues to grow. Projects included creating fall trees by stamping multicolored leaves with bingo daubers, creating bright collages using sponge-dot stamping, designing plastic dots to hang from the ceiling while practicing pattern-making and line work with colored Sharpies, tie-dying dots using spray techniques, and exploring the work of Georges Seurat and practiced the pointillism technique with markers—creating “dots or not dots.” #LearnGrowEngageGreendale #CultivatingExcellence

Third grade students at Canterbury celebrated the end of their first ELA unit of the year in style! After learning about “Classic Tales”, students attended a tea party where they enjoyed refreshments, read each other’s paragraphs on themes from “The Wind in the Willows”, and had a chance to disguise Toad, a favorite character from the story. This celebration was also combined with an annual tie-dye event, where students create unique shirts to wear throughout the year!

Fourth grade students at Canterbury are learning about using sensory details in narrative writing during ELA. They read a narrative story about a girl who ate a guava. Since many of the students never tried one before, we all tried guava and used sensory details to write about our experience. Overall, the students really liked them!
